The rising sun flag was first used by merchant ship to identify themselves as being of Japanese nationality during the Edo period. The flag then evolved into the national symbol of Japan as “The Land of the Rising Sun”. The ratio of height to length is 2 to 3; the circle in the center has a diameter which is 3/5 of the height of the flag.
