日本の年中行事を英語で説明するには…？
一年を通じて、日本には各地で行われる独特の行事があります。
地方によってお祝いの仕方は異なってきますし、旧暦でお祝いするところもあります。

☆年中行事を英語で：正月
The New Year is one of the most important occasions for all Japanese. Relatives living far away gather together to celebrate the New Year, wishing for the future health of every family member.
お正月は、日本人にとって、最も大事な行事の一つです。そのため、遠くに住む家族も帰省し集まり、みんなで新しい年をお祝いし、一年間の家族の健康を願います。
☆年中行事を英語で：元旦
People visit shrines and temples with their families on New Year’s Day. Also, they visit their relatives to deliver New Year’s greetings. Quite a few people wear kimono on this special day.
元旦には、神社やお寺を訪れたりします。また、親戚の家に年始の挨拶に行きます。多くの人が着物を着て出かけます。
☆年中行事を英語で：お正月飾り
New Year’s decorations are made to welcome in the gods at the beginning of the year. They consist of propitious decorations.
お正月の飾りは、神様をお迎えするためのもので、あしらうものは縁起の良いものでできています。
☆年中行事を英語で：雑煮
A special New Year’s soup with rice cakes, vegetables, etc. In the Eastern district, people prefer clear soup; in the Western district, people prefer white miso soup.
お汁にお餅や野菜などを入れたお正月の料理です。関東地方ではすまし仕立てで、関西地方では白みそ仕立てが一般的です。

People send New Year’s postcards to their friends, relatives and colleagues to express their New Year’s resolutions as well as to give updates on their lives. Usually special New Year’s lottery postal cards are issued for this purpose.
新年の抱負や近況を、友達や親戚、仕事関係の人に伝えるために、年賀状を送ります。一般的に、お年玉付き年賀ハガキが使われます。

The first calligraphy of the year is conducted on January 2nd. People write their resolutions for the coming year, facing a lucky direction.
1月2日、その年のいい方向に向かって、新年の抱負を毛筆で書きます。

・羽根つき: Hanetsuki
A game like badminton for two people, where the shuttlecock is hit with the wooden racket. The person who loses has and “X” mark drawn on their face with India ink.
バドミントンのように、二人で羽小板を使って羽を打つゲームです。負けると顔に墨で印をつけられます。
・凧あげ: Kite-flying
A traditional children’s pastime of flying kites.
凧あげは、子どもの伝統的な遊びとして受け継がれています。
・こま回し: Top
Wind a long string around the top and pull it. The top will start rolling.
長いひもをこまに巻き付け、そのひもを引っぱると、こまが回りはじめます。
・カルタ: Karuta
A traditional game in which people compete to pick up picture cards that match opening lines read out aloud by a referee from proverbs and ancient Japanese poems.
ことわざの「いろはカルタ」などで、読み手の読んだカードの絵札を探すゲームです。
・福笑い: Fukuwarai
Players are blindfolded, and place ears, eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows on the outline of the face of Otafuku (a chubby-cheeked woman), and enjoy comparing the results.
遊ぶ人は目隠しをして、おたふくの顔に耳や目、鼻、口、眉毛をおいて、出来をみて楽しみます。
・すごろく: Parcheesi
A player moves forward according to the number he/she throws on the dice. The first one who completes the steps wins.
さいころの出た目の数だけ進んでいくゲームです。先にゴールした人が勝ちとなります。
